It's heartworm season!
So what is heartworm? Heartworms are spaghetti-like parasites, that when a pet is infected can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets; mainly dogs, cats, and ferrets. Animals are infected by the bite of an infected mosquito that then pass the microfilariae into their blood stream. From there these microfilariae mature into adult heartworms, further passing more microfilariae into the animals blood stream. This disease is very serious, with limited treatment for dogs, and no current approved treatment for cats, so prevention is always the best option!
So how can you protect your fur babies at home? Best form of protection is starting your animals on heartworm preventative medication as soon as is is warm enough for mosquitos to be out! The earlier it is detected, the better the chances the pet will recover. There are few, if any, early signs of disease when a dog or cat is infected with heartworms, so detecting their presence with a heartworm test administered by a veterinarian is important!
Please reach out to us if you have not started heartworm prevention for your animal at home, and have peace of mind that your pets are protected. A heartworm detection test prior to starting the medication is essential, as administering heartworm medication to an already infected animal can be fatal. We are always here for you, if you have any questions or concerns regarding heartworms, or preventative medications.

As we start to experience these warmer days those pesky mosquitos come out as well! All it takes it one bite from a mosquito carrying heartworm to infect your furry friend at home.
There are multiple types of mosquitos, ranging from mosquitos that are out during the day, and at night that carry heartworm, so it is important to keep your animals protected regardless of the time of day they are outside.
Although we can eliminate adult heartworms from infected dogs, some pathology becomes irreversible, leading to lifelong disease. This is why prevention of the disease is so important.
Talk to one of our team members today if your dog AND/OR cat currently isn't being protected against heartworm.
